Take a look at the 2008 top fuel economy winners
           The EPA lists the best

The Ford Escape Hybrid tied for top place in the fuel efficiency rankings of SUVs.

The Environmental Protection Agency recently released a list of the 2008 vehicles ranked top ten in fuel economy. They also list  the top fuel efficient model for each type of vehicle.
First place in the sport utility vehicles category was a three-way tie between the Ford Escape Hybrid FWD, Mazda Tribute Hybrid 2WD and Mercury Mariner Hybrid FWD. They all were rated as getting 34/30 (city/highway) miles per gallon.
The winner in the compact car category was the Honda Civic Hybrid, rated 40/45 mpg.
The Toyota Prius has the highest rating of all, 48/45 mpg, and is top in the midsize car class.
The Honda Fit (manual), at  28/34 mpg, had the highest rating for small station wagons, and the VW Passat Wagon (manual), at 21/29 mpg, had the highest rating for midsize station wagon.
The most fuel efficient minivans only rated 17/24 mpg, and the best pick-up trucks only 21/26 mpg.
Top ranked vehicles include some in the lower price range - Toyota Yaris, Toyota Corolla, and Honda Fit.
"Today's consumers expect the biggest bang for their buck. By fueling them with information on this year's fleet of vehicles, we are putting Americans in the driver's seat to save money at the pump and protect our environment," said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson. "As we see in the wide range of fuel efficient leaders, 'going green' can fit the needs of any lifestyle."
Because of the new, more realistic methods of rating fuel economy, estimates for all vehicles will be lower, in general, than those last year.

The Green Vehicle Guide Web site, http://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles, provides browsers with a guide to locate the cleanest and most fuel efficient vehicle that meets their needs. EPA has just launched a major redesign of this popular consumer-oriented web site to make it even easier to search for greener vehicles, new or  used.
