Fuel efficient doesn't mean tight squeeze

The Honda Fit is an economical, top 10 fuel efficient car.

John, Justine and Lukas Missik are easily sharing the Honda Fit with their four large dogs.

The Missiks traded their large van for the Fit. which is an economical, top ten fuel efficient car.

There is a surprising amount of interior room in many of the top most fuel efficient cars. Even if you have lots of stuff to carry, you can still enjoy an efficient car, especially if it has a flexible interior. A bicycle, laying on its side, can be carried in the back of the Prius. Even though it is small, the Honda Fit has plenty of feet and leg room, and can carry cargo almost 8 feet long. Because you can flip the back seats vertically, you can also carry cargo 4 feet tall.
For occasionally carrying even larger loads, rather than buying a SUV, you may be better off getting a fuel efficient vehicle with a roof rack that you can outfit with a storage “rocket box” when needed. Another option is to get the most fuel efficient vehicle you can find that has a tow hitch, and use an extra light weight trailer for occasional hauling. If there are rare occasions that you actually need a large high powered vehicle, remember you can always rent one.  If your family has two vehicles, try to use the most fuel efficient one whenever possible.
Get the vehicle that fills your everyday needs most efficiently, instead of basing your purchase on an occasional need to carry lots of cargo.  You will save on gas and probably on price.  Driving a fuel efficient car is a very major step in significantly decreasing your greenhouse gas emissions.
