Free Thermostat Saves

Energy and Money

Mark Little, Demand Conservation Specialist, installs a programmable thermostat for Joe and Donna Forgacs.

This was installed and provided for free by LG&E/KU.

Why waste energy cooling or heating an empty house? With a programmable thermostat you won’t forget to adjust the thermostat before leaving each day and your thermostat can put the temperature back where you want it before you get home! Set the thermostat so that, while you are away, your home will be somewhat warmer in the summer, and cooler in the winter. Also, plan to use less heating or cooling while you are on vacation, and at night while you are asleep.
A programmable thermostat can save you lots of money on your cooling and heating costs, and is an important tool to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. Using energy obtained by the burning of fossil fuels (coal, gas, or oil) is the major way we each cause greenhouse gas pollution. Cutting down on our use of energy for air conditioning and heating is an important action to decrease the amount of global warming.
You can buy a programmable thermostat at the hardware store. Or, if you are a customer of Kentucky Utilities or Louisville Gas and Electric, you can get one for free. They can use their programmable "Demand Conservation" thermostat to turn off your central air conditioning system or heat pump for a few minutes at a time on the very heaviest demand days of the year when demand for energy soars. It is not likely that you would even notice the difference. Kentucky Utilities states that “the reduced energy demand certainly makes a difference to the environment. We have already eliminated the need for a 100-megawatt, gas-powered generator.” “That’s 100 megawatts of high-cost, gas-powered electricity that KU won’t have to build for summer energy.”
